AMC is developing a new series that continues the story of the "Ex-Presidents" gang.

The iconic early '90s cult crime-action film Point Break is set to be expanded into a television series. AMC has initiated development on a show inspired by Kathryn Bigelow’s original movie, choosing to broaden the film’s universe rather than produce a straightforward remake.

Currently in the early phases of production, sources reveal that AMC secured the rights to the property amid intense competition from other studios. The series’ script is being crafted by Dave Kalstein, a writer known for his work on high-intensity TV dramas.

Details about the upcoming series

The project is a joint venture between AMC Studios and Alcon Television Group. In addition to penning the script, Kalstein will serve as an executive producer alongside Andrew A. Kosove and Broderick Johnson, who were also producers on both the original 1991 film and the unsuccessful 2015 remake.

The creators have made it clear that the series will not simply retell the classic story. Instead, it will expand and evolve the narrative established by the original cult hit.

Link to the 1991 classic

The 1991 film, directed by Kathryn Bigelow and scripted by W. Peter Iliff, follows rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah (played by Keanu Reeves) as he infiltrates a Southern California surfer gang known as the "Ex-Presidents." This criminal crew executed bank heists while wearing masks of former U.S. presidents, led by the enigmatic Bodhi, portrayed by Patrick Swayze.

Point Break became a cult favorite thanks to its unique mix of adrenaline-pumping action, themes of freedom, and extreme sports culture, culminating in an iconic final scene featuring a deadly big-wave surf.

Storyline and time progression

The new series is set approximately 35 years after the original film’s events. It will center on a fresh, dangerous group of criminals linked in some way to the legacy of the "Ex-Presidents." The nature of this connection—whether direct lineage or thematic inspiration—remains under wraps.

The show aims to preserve the original’s core motifs of risk-taking, freedom, and thrilling danger while adapting these ideas to contemporary contexts and a serialized storytelling format.

Creative team background and reboot history

Dave Kalstein brings experience from acclaimed series such as NCIS: Los Angeles, Quantico, and Treadstone, making him well-suited to helm a crime-action series.

It’s worth noting that the 2015 Point Break reboot, directed by Ericson Core, underperformed at the box office and did not spawn any sequels. AMC’s approach with this new series appears focused on delivering a more nuanced and thoughtful continuation, avoiding the pitfalls of the previous remake.
