Movie theaters are asking Congress to stop the sale of Warner Bros.
Leading cinema chains oppose the proposed sale of Warner Bros. Discovery, citing fears of increased industry monopolization.
The U.S. movie theater sector has openly criticized the possible acquisition of media giant Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD). Representatives from the industry plan to appeal to Congress to block the transaction should a major streaming service emerge as the buyer of this historic Hollywood studio.
Congressional Appeal and Antitrust Concerns
The global theater association Cinema United, which advocates for cinema operators, has formally submitted a statement to the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial, and Administrative Law. This follows the announcement of an upcoming hearing focused on Warner Bros. Discovery’s potential sale.
In their submission, Cinema United highlights significant worries regarding the impact such a deal could have on the film distribution ecosystem, especially if the studio’s ownership transfers to Netflix.
Apprehensions Surrounding a Netflix Acquisition
Cinema United stresses that Netflix acquiring Warner Bros. could trigger lasting and irreversible harm to movie theaters globally.
“We are profoundly concerned that Netflix’s takeover of Warner Bros. would directly and permanently damage the theatrical exhibition sector,” the group’s statement declares.
The association warns that such a merger would risk concentrating excessive power within the entertainment industry, consolidating film production and distribution under a single dominant global platform.
Risks to Traditional Film Distribution Channels
The core of the theaters’ objection lies in Netflix’s streaming-focused business model, which traditionally deprioritizes wide theatrical releases. Cinema United argues that handing control of one of Hollywood’s largest studios to a streaming-centric company could significantly weaken the conventional cinema exhibition framework.
They further note that the market already faces substantial monopolistic pressures, and this acquisition would only exacerbate those challenges.
Potential Buyers of Warner Bros. Discovery
At present, Netflix and Paramount Global are regarded as the leading candidates vying to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. Industry insiders report that negotiations remain intense, with major sticking points involving valuation and deal conditions.
The cinema industry’s pushback and the scheduled Congressional hearings could pose formidable political and regulatory hurdles that might impede the completion of the sale, regardless of the eventual purchaser.
