Lead Character in Landman Was Inspired by Bad Santa
Taylor Sheridan has shared that the character he crafted for Billy Bob Thornton in *Landman* was heavily inspired by the dark comedy *Bad Santa*.
As the creator behind hit series like *Yellowstone* and *Landman*, Sheridan explained that Tommy Norris, the crisis manager at the oil company, was initially envisioned as a dramatic reinterpretation of Willie, the crude, foul-mouthed antihero played by Thornton in the 2003 holiday film. Sheridan noted that drawing this parallel immediately resonated with Thornton, helping him grasp the character’s essence and leading to his enthusiastic decision to join the project.
### Sheridan’s Unique Approach to Pitching *Landman*
During an appearance on *The Bill Simmons Podcast*, Sheridan recounted how he first pitched the series to Billy Bob Thornton. His pitch was straightforward: **"I want to make a drama about Bad Santa running an oil company."**
Thornton quickly understood the concept and responded, **"That’s the coolest thing I’ve ever heard,"** prompting him to accept the role almost instantly.
### From Willie to Tommy Norris: A Tougher Character
Sheridan confirmed that the similarities between Willie and Norris were deliberate. The character of Tommy Norris inherits Willie’s bluntness, abrasive attitude, cynical humor, and penchant for delivering uncomfortable truths.
However, the environment in which Norris operates is markedly different—rather than department stores and petty scams, he navigates oil fields, corporate crises, legal battles, and drilling crews. Despite these differences, Norris remains true to his core personality: a principled individual uninterested in pleasing others and committed to acting according to his own moral code.
### Unexpected International Success
Initially, Billy Bob Thornton and the creative team believed *Landman* would primarily appeal to American viewers, especially those in oil-rich regions and the Midwest. However, following its debut, the response surpassed all expectations.
Thornton revealed that the show's popularity quickly grew beyond the U.S., capturing audiences in countries like Australia and Uganda. He attributes this widespread appeal to Sheridan’s distinctive storytelling style, which seamlessly combines workplace drama, suspense, dark humor, and compelling characters. This blend transformed a story rooted in the oil industry into a global television phenomenon.
Tommy Norris, in particular, has become one of Thornton’s most acclaimed recent roles, earning a Golden Globe nomination and solidifying his place as a standout character in the series.
