YouTube Cracks Down on AI-Generated Fake Movie Trailers

Google has launched a comprehensive crackdown on YouTube channels distributing AI-generated fake movie trailers, which falsely presented themselves as official releases from major film studios and deceived viewers.

This move aligns with YouTube’s enhanced policies targeting misleading content amid the rapid expansion of generative AI tools and their growing presence in digital media.

Removal of High-Profile Channels with Millions of Followers

YouTube has permanently banned two prominent channels, Screen Culture and KH Studio, both known for producing counterfeit trailers for upcoming movies and TV series. Together, these channels boasted over two million subscribers and accumulated upwards of one billion views.

Earlier this year, after an internal probe into the distribution of fake trailers, YouTube had demonetized these channels. At that time, the creators added disclaimers such as “fan trailer” and “parody” to their video titles, which enabled them to regain advertising revenue temporarily.

Policy Breach Leads to Permanent Ban

According to YouTube officials, the channels recently removed these warning labels and reverted to their original presentation style, violating the platform’s rules against spam and deceptive metadata.

As a result, YouTube’s administration opted for a full ban on these channels with no option for reinstatement.

Hollywood Studios Seek Revenue from Fake Trailers

Investigations also revealed that major Hollywood studios, including Warner Bros. Discovery and Sony, chose not to pursue copyright infringement claims. Instead, they reportedly requested YouTube to redirect the ad revenue generated by these fake trailers to themselves. Studio representatives have yet to comment officially.

Disney’s Influence Intensifies YouTube’s Actions

Notably, last week Disney sent a formal letter to Google demanding the removal of numerous channels infringing on its copyrights. Industry experts believe this pressure significantly contributed to YouTube’s swift and stringent enforcement measures.
