Kevin Costner has been sued for non-payment of costume rental fees
Kevin Costner’s Western Epic Horizons Faces Renewed Financial Setbacks
Kevin Costner and his production company, Territory Pictures, are once again embroiled in legal troubles tied to the western saga Horizons. The costume rental company, Western Costume, has filed a lawsuit accusing Costner and his team of failing to settle payments for costumes rented during the filming of Horizons: Part 2.
The lawsuit, filed in a California court, seeks to recover roughly $440,000 in unpaid rental fees, along with additional compensation for costumes returned in damaged condition after production wrapped.
Ongoing Financial Struggles for the Ambitious Series
This legal challenge adds to the mounting financial and logistical hurdles plaguing Costner’s ambitious Horizons project. Originally planned as a four-film saga, the endeavor has encountered significant difficulties bringing this vision to fruition.
While the first film had a hefty budget of approximately $100 million, its global box office returns fell short, earning just over $38.7 million. The release of the second installment, which was expected last year, has been postponed indefinitely with no confirmed new premiere date.
Unsuccessful Funding Efforts
To secure financing for the latter chapters of the saga, Costner engaged in discussions with investors from Saudi Arabia, but these talks failed to produce a funding agreement. As of last year, the production of Horizons 3 remained underfunded, casting uncertainty over its completion.
Importantly, this is not the first time Territory Pictures has faced lawsuits over unpaid prop and costume rentals related to the Horizons series. Earlier in the year, a similar dispute was settled concerning outstanding fees for rentals used in the first two films.
Looking Ahead: New Studio Development
Despite these setbacks, Kevin Costner remains committed to his production ambitions. Construction is underway on a new $100 million film studio in Utah, developed through a partnership between Territory Pictures and a local real estate firm. This studio represents a strategic investment aimed at establishing an independent filmmaking hub for future projects.
