George Clooney and his family have acquired French citizenship
George Clooney Cites Children's Privacy as Key Reason for Citizenship Change
Renowned American actor George Clooney and his wife, esteemed human rights attorney Amal Clooney, have officially acquired French citizenship. This development was confirmed through a decree published in the official French government publication, Journal Officiel, over the recent weekend. Their eight-year-old twins, Ella and Alexander, were also granted French nationality as part of this naturalization process.
As outlined by the published decree, the French authorities followed formal procedures to grant citizenship, reflecting the Clooney family's strong and ongoing connection with France, where they have spent considerable time over the years.
French Property and Deep Roots in Provence
The Clooneys own a notable property in southern France, the former wine estate Domaine du Canadel located in the scenic Provence region. Acquired in 2021, this estate serves as a primary residence for the family when in Europe.
According to reports from French media, George Clooney highly values the region for its privacy, safety, and seclusion—qualities that are especially important for raising children away from the public eye.
Motivations Behind French Naturalization
George Clooney has openly discussed his commitment to protecting his children from invasive media scrutiny. During an interview with French radio station RTL in early December, he highlighted specific aspects of French laws that help shield his family from paparazzi intrusion.
"Here, children aren’t photographed. There are no paparazzi lurking outside school gates. That is the most important factor for us," Clooney explained.
In a previous conversation with Esquire magazine, he also shared his clear intention to avoid raising their children in the spotlight of Hollywood.
"I don’t want our children growing up in Los Angeles, constantly being compared to other celebrity kids," he stated.
Embracing a European Lifestyle Focused on Privacy and Peace
Beyond their French estate, the Clooneys also own a historic manor in the United Kingdom and the iconic villa on Lake Como, Italy, which George Clooney purchased in 2002. Nonetheless, he has referred to Provence as the place "where we are the happiest."
By obtaining French citizenship, the Clooney family reaffirms their preference for a European lifestyle centered on privacy, security, and tranquility, deliberately choosing to live away from the constant glare of Hollywood fame.
