The creator of 'RRR' has directed the most expensive film in Indian history
Filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli’s latest project has been announced with a colossal Hollywood-scale budget, setting the stage to become one of the most significant cinematic events in recent Indian box office history.
Renowned Indian director S.S. Rajamouli, who achieved worldwide recognition with the blockbuster film "RRR," is currently finalizing his upcoming production titled "Varanasi." This film is poised to become the most expensive project ever made in Indian cinema, with reports from Variety indicating that its production costs have surpassed $150 million—more than doubling the budget of Rajamouli’s previous hit.
**A Record-Breaking Budget and International Scale**
To put this into perspective, "RRR," which grossed approximately $166 million globally—around $130 million of which was earned in India—was produced on a budget of $72 million. In contrast, "Varanasi" is nearly twice as expensive, positioning it alongside major Hollywood productions in terms of financial scale.
Rajamouli describes "Varanasi" as the fulfillment of a long-standing dream—a "global adventure" designed to captivate an international audience and elevate Indian cinema on the world stage.
**Filming Across Continents and Extreme Locations**
The production has spanned three continents, with filming taking place across diverse terrains. The crew has shot scenes in various regions of India, explored the lush forests of Kenya, and even ventured into the challenging environment of Antarctica, making it one of the few Indian films to shoot in such extreme conditions.
A considerable portion of the budget has been allocated to logistical complexities, shooting in remote and harsh locations, as well as to extensive visual effects. The filmmakers highlight that the scale of visual effects involved is unprecedented within Indian cinema, underscoring the film’s ambitious nature.
**Star Cast and Release Schedule**
The leading roles are portrayed by acclaimed actors Mahesh Babu, Sharat Saxena, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. "Varanasi" is envisioned as a grand, international story that aims to achieve or surpass the success of "RRR" on global markets.
The film is scheduled for a wide theatrical release on April 7, 2027, promising to be a landmark event in Indian filmmaking.
