Christopher Nolan's film "Interstellar" was originally envisioned as a deeply personal father-son story. During the 2026 Oscar Nominees Luncheon, an intriguing conversation took place between Timothée Chalamet and Nolan about the film's development. Chalamet shared his initial excitement upon securing the role, only to feel disappointed when he discovered that an early draft of the script featured a much more prominent part for his character. "That script was penned by Jonathan Nolan, Christopher’s brother, intended for Steven Spielberg," Chalamet explained. "When I was cast, I looked up the project and found that the original story centered on a father and son. I thought, 'Wow, I've really made it!' But then the script was revised, and my character became a minor figure." Nolan quickly interjected, "Never believe everything you read online!" So how did "Interstellar" transition from a Spielberg project to a Nolan masterpiece? Nolan recounts that the seed was planted when physicist Kip Thorne approached Steven Spielberg with an idea for a science-fiction film rooted in authentic science, exploring a profound vision of the universe. "Right after finishing 'The Dark Knight,' my brother Jonathan was commissioned to collaborate with Spielberg. I can call him Steven—though you might know him as Mr. Spielberg," Nolan joked, turning to Chalamet. "Jonathan dedicated years to developing this project. It was filled with incredible scientific concepts, and the script went through many drafts. But as long as Spielberg wasn’t ready to move forward with production, the project stalled. Eventually, Spielberg shifted his focus to another film, and the rights became available." Nolan also shared his admiration for his brother’s work on the script. "I was deeply impressed by the first act. At the time, I was exploring ideas around time travel—had some half-finished projects on that theme. When the script became accessible, I asked Jonathan how he felt about me taking it and blending it with my own concepts, making some adjustments to the original storyline. He was supportive." When "Interstellar" premiered in November 2014, it went on to gross $681 million worldwide and garnered five Oscar nominations, winning for Best Visual Effects. Despite its commercial success and critical recognition, the film’s reception was mixed—especially when compared to Nolan’s previous hits like "The Dark Knight" and "Inception." Nolan reflected, "Critics were skeptical, and some audiences weren’t fully receptive. It might sound egotistical, but I think people just weren’t ready for what I was trying to do with this film."
