In 2000, following a peace accord between the Philippine government and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), a faction of dissatisfied members broke away to establish the Abu Sayyaf Group. On March 20 of that year, Abu Sayyaf militants abducted Fr. Rhoel Gallardo along with several others in Basilan, marking a significant event in the group's history.
