Years after leaving his small hometown behind, Joel returns to help move his mother, Monika, into a care residence for seniors battling dementia. Shortly after settling in, Monika’s health deteriorates rapidly. She begins to suffer terrifying hallucinations of her late husband—Joel’s abusive father—and starts to act out violently. Joel becomes convinced that an evil, supernatural force has taken hold of his mother. However, given his own struggles with substance abuse and mental health issues, he questions whether his perceptions are reliable. As Monika’s memories continue to fade, Joel is forced to confront his own haunted past—memories and traumas resurfaced by his return to the place where he grew up.
