Google has made concessions to Disney and will delete all AI videos
Google Agrees to Disney’s Terms on AI-Generated Content Featuring Its Characters
Following an official demand from Disney earlier this week, Google has committed to adhering to the media giant’s requests concerning the use of its iconic characters in AI-generated videos. Disney’s letter called for the immediate removal of content featuring its characters on YouTube and YouTube Shorts.
Removal of AI Videos Featuring Disney Intellectual Property
In response, Google has already taken down numerous videos created with generative AI technology that showcased Disney-owned characters such as Mickey Mouse, Deadpool, and figures from Star Wars and The Simpsons. Disney’s notice included direct links to offending channels, some of which had utilized Google's own AI platform, Veo, to produce the content.
Context of the Disney-OpenAI Licensing Agreement
This enforcement action coincides with Disney’s recent partnership with OpenAI, granting licensed usage of over 200 of its characters within the Sora neural network. This deal enables users to legally generate short-form videos featuring Disney characters, highlighting Disney’s efforts to differentiate authorized uses from unauthorized exploitation in AI applications.
Prohibition on Using Disney Characters for Training AI Models
Beyond content removal, Disney has also insisted that Google halt the inclusion of its characters in training datasets for AI model development. The demand encompassed a comprehensive list of images depicting characters from popular franchises such as Frozen, Moana, Toy Story, Lilo & Stitch, and more.
Google has accepted all of Disney’s conditions, underscoring its commitment to preserving a positive and collaborative relationship with the entertainment powerhouse.
“We value our long-standing partnership with Disney and look forward to continuing our cooperation,” Google representatives affirmed.
