Sydney Sweeney will return in the thriller sequel The Maid
Lionsgate has officially approved a sequel to their box office sensation and appointed Paul Feig to adapt the novel The Housemaid's Secret.
The psychological thriller The Maid emerged as one of this year’s biggest hits, motivating Lionsgate to expand the storyline. Following impressive box office results, it was confirmed that a sequel is underway, inspired by Freida McFadden’s second novel, The Housemaid's Secret.
Box Office Triumph Sparks Sequel Development
Within just two and a half weeks of release, The Maid amassed an impressive $133 million worldwide, far exceeding its $35 million production budget. This remarkable success underscored strong audience engagement with Millie’s journey and encouraged Lionsgate to swiftly greenlight the follow-up.
The film’s widespread acclaim and fan enthusiasm were pivotal in driving the decision to move forward with the sequel without delay.
Returning Creative Team and Cast
Director Paul Feig will return to helm the sequel, alongside lead actors Sydney Sweeney, reprising her role as Millie, and Michele Morrone, who will once again portray Enzo. Production is slated to commence later this year.
As with the original, the sequel’s production will be managed by Hidden Pictures and Pretty Dangerous Pictures.
Recap of The Maid
The first film followed a young woman, Millie, striving to leave her troubled past behind. She begins working for the affluent couple, Nina and Andrew Winchester, portrayed by Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar. Gradually, dark secrets about the homeowners come to light.
The closing credits, featuring Taylor Swift’s track I Did Something Bad, hinted strongly at a continuation of the storyline.
Details on the Upcoming Sequel
The next chapter draws from Freida McFadden’s second novel, offering a solid narrative base for the filmmakers. Paul Feig remarked on the project’s progression:
“We’re lucky that Freida McFadden already penned Millie’s next adventure, which gives us a fantastic foundation to adapt.”
Amanda Seyfried’s Potential Cameo
At the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Amanda Seyfried spoke about the sequel prospects. While she hasn’t received an official invitation yet, she expressed confidence that the sequel will materialize.
Seyfried hopes to make a brief cameo and is eager to reprise her role as Nina Winchester, particularly curious to explore how Millie might keep her former employer “on a short leash.”
