Sarah Rector, an African-American girl born in Oklahoma Indian Territory in the early 1900s, had a strong belief that her seemingly barren land held hidden oil reserves. Her intuition proved accurate when oil was discovered beneath her property. As opportunistic oil speculators sought to seize control of her valuable land, Sarah relied on the support of her family, friends, and a few Texas wildcatters to protect her interests. By the age of eleven, she had become one of the first African-American female millionaires in the United States, thanks to the wealth generated from her oil-rich land.
