Jamie Lee Curtis missed out on The Exorcist because of her mother
Jamie Lee Curtis Reveals How Her Mother Prevented an Early Horror Role
Jamie Lee Curtis, famed for her iconic role in the Halloween horror series, shared a surprising revelation about how her journey into horror could have begun much earlier—back in the early 1970s with one of cinema’s most chilling films. However, her mother, actress Janet Lee, consciously blocked Curtis from auditioning for the infamous role in The Exorcist.
During an appearance on Drew Barrymore’s talk show, Curtis opened up about the family decision that profoundly shaped her career path.
A Childhood Opportunity That Was Declined
Jamie Lee Curtis recounted that when she was about 12 years old, the producer of The Exorcist reached out to her mother with an offer for her daughter to audition for the role of Regan MacNeil, the possessed child central to the film’s terrifying plot.
“The producer called my mom and asked if I could try out for the adaptation of The Exorcist. I was around twelve—noticeable and full of character, not a quiet kid. Apparently, he spotted me at a party and thought I’d be perfect for the part,” Curtis recalled.
Janet Lee, however, gave a firm and immediate refusal, choosing not to even entertain the idea of her daughter stepping into such a dark and intense role at a young age.
Protecting Childhood Over Early Stardom
Reflecting on this decision years later, Jamie Lee Curtis expressed deep gratitude toward her mother’s protective instincts. She believes Janet Lee prioritized her daughter’s emotional well-being and childhood experiences over early fame and career opportunities.
“Thank God my mom wanted me to enjoy a normal childhood,” Curtis shared with Barrymore, whose own acting career began at the tender age of seven with E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Only as an adult did Curtis fully grasp how psychologically taxing it might have been to be involved in such a disturbing film at such a young age.
The Path Jamie Lee Curtis Ultimately Took
The role of Regan MacNeil ultimately went to Linda Blair, earning her international acclaim and an Academy Award nomination. Jamie Lee Curtis stepped into the horror spotlight later, at age 19, starring as Laurie Strode in John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978). This role cemented her status as a horror icon and earned her the nickname “Scream Queen.”
In 2022, Curtis closed the chapter on Laurie Strode by reprising the character in Halloween Ends, the conclusion of the recent trilogy.
Looking Ahead: The Future of The Exorcist Franchise
Interestingly, the Exorcist saga is set for a fresh reboot under the direction of acclaimed horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan. Production is slated for February 2026, with Scarlett Johansson rumored to lead the cast.
Janet Lee’s decision to shield her daughter nearly fifty years ago not only kept Jamie Lee Curtis from an early plunge into dark horror but also allowed her to enter the genre on her own terms—mature, self-assured, and ready to leave her mark.
